1- Introduction to the Subfamily Styphelioideae Sweet
+ Overview
The Subfamily Styphelioideae Sweet is in the the Family Ericaceae of the Order Ericales. Subfamily Styphelioideae Sweet includes 35 genera and about 420 species.
Synonyms:
1- Epacridaceae
2- Epacridoideae
+ Characteristics
Most members of the Subfamily Styphelioideae are restricted to Australia and New Zealand. These plants prefer acid soils and often have tough leaves that end in a sharp point. The flowers often have a fuzzy appearance due to the hairs inside the petals
The Subfamily Styphelioideae (formerly Epacridaceae) include 35 genera and about 420 species that are widely distributed in Australasia. Western Australia, Tasmania and Southeast Australia are centres of diversity. The group is characterised by a lignified leaf epidermis, scarious inflorescence bracts, a persistent corolla, stamens less that two times the number of corolla lobes, smooth anther filaments, bisporangiate usually monothecal anthers, and probably a branched vascular bundle in the leaf petiole. Traditionally the subfamily has been separated into two groups distinguished by capsular and fleshy fruits.
